Introduction
Hi my name is Clara and I’m the owner of Honeybourne Farm located in Melbourne, Australia.
Breeding Miniature Lop Rabbits and sometime next year (2017) starting up with some rare Miniature Sliver Appleyard Ducks our main focus is to breed our animals to the standard set out for the breeds.
We also breed and show American Staffordshire Terriers under our kennel by the same name.
My Life With Rabbits
My life with rabbits has been off and on for years I first remember having rabbits when I was about six my mum had a lilac Angora rabbit that for the life of me I cannot remember her name.
As a six-year-old I wanted my own baby rabbit, Easter 1994 my mum got me what I believe to be a Red Eyed White Dwarf cross which I named Snowy of course. My Grandfather hand built these two rabbits a mansion three time bigger than any rabbit hutch you can by in a pet store these days, sadly both rabbits got very ill and passed away.
When I was about sixteen I did a fund raiser at my high school selling handmade Easter Bunny Chocolates to get the funds to buy myself a couple of rabbits. After rising the money I bought myself two female Dwarf crosses a Siamese sable which my friends and I named Crystal Meth and a broken black we named Cocaine which got shorten to Crystal and Caine as their where just to long.
After just owning Crystal for about a couple of months sadly one day we notice a lump on her right side, my Mum took her to the vets strait away but her lump turned out to be a tumour and as much as we tried we could not save her life.
Caine then had the run of our yard only being put in her hutch at nights, she even bossed use and the two cats around. My Sister and I really hated this rabbit and she hated us, chasing us around the yard stomping and grunting at us if we went to close to her and even biting us on the foot or ankle if she caught up to us, but she loved my Mum and our two cats even playing chase with them in he yard.
We had Caine till she was about four years old, In Victoria we were having really bad drought and on a very hot summers day Caine sadly passed away.
After Caine passed on I then found a little kitten which I decided to keep after not being able to find his owner, he become my baby and my best friend. When I lost my cat in August 2012 it was very hard for me and I’m still not over his death, I decided when he died I would never get another cat but my heart needed to fill the hole he had left, instead of another cat I started thinking of getting another rabbit.
In September of that same year my friend and I went to the Royal Melbourne Show we seen these floppy eared rabbits at the Rabbit Breeders Association of Victoria stall and just fell in love and thought I had to have one, months went past and I still wanted a floppy eared rabbit so in April of 2013 I really started looking and was offered a blue point Dwarf Lop doe I named Quinn little did I know there was a difference between Dwarf Lops and Mini Lops at the time. After getting Quinn I started doing more research and it occurred to me I had gotten the wrong breed (silly me) I then get Zeke my Vienna marked black Mini Lop in May of 2013.
Only getting these two rabbits for pets, while I was doing some more research on the Vienna Gene I realized you could show rabbits like dogs and cats, too me that sounded fun as I already showed my dogs.In July 2013 I received my membership to the Rabbit Breeders Association of Victoria and received my stud name Honeybourne to breed my Mini Lops under.
By the time October come around I had 6 Mini Lops and Quinn my Dwarf Lop, my first rabbit show was to be the Sunbury Agricultural Show which I only took one rabbit to, Precious Bunnies Bam Bam, we took home a second place ribbon at that show.
I did only two more shows that year before the show season ended for 2013 getting first places with Bam Bam in both shows and my very first Best Unrung In Show with my boy Oliver.
I started off 2014’s show season with my very first home bred Kits Honeybourne Fleur, Honeybourne Flora and my favorite little baby Honeybourne Darcy, these little guys did me proud winning plenty of prizes.
I have now been breeding for almost three years and have 18 Mini Lops.
